2009 AutumnFest Draws a Crowd
Avondale showed off its fall colors for about 2,000 festival-goers during the Arts Alliance’s AutumnFest in October.
“Those who braved the cold on Saturday were rewarded with good holiday shopping and lively entertainment,” said Melitta Brandt, chair of the fall festival.
“Despite the damp, cold weather on Saturday, the children held their annual Halloween parade with Shrek and Fiona,” Brandt said.” In fact, you could see Where the Wild Things Are creatures, as well as princesses, pirates and other characters throughout the day in the Children’s Area. Many thanks to Christina Steiner for her hard work in making all the children’s activities a success.”
This year, organizers moved AutumnFest back to its original location across from City Hall.
“What a great turn out!” said city manager Clai Brown. “I was at the festival yesterday, and it really was packed. It is great to hear that the vendors did well. I think moving it to S. Avondale helped with the foot traffic and set up of the vendors.”
By Sunday, the cold weather disappeared and the crowds came out in force to partake of the fun atmosphere and find that perfect gift or treasure.
Brandt, the festival committee and countless volunteers managed over 90 vendors. Former board member Vickie Bolton organized two days of musical entertainment, including the a group from the DeKalb Symphony.
The vendors were pleased with the turnout, too. “Just wanted to again tell you how much fun we had at AutumnFest this weekend and thank you and your crew for letting us be a part of the festival,” said vendors Wesley and Peggy Daniel. “You all did a great job and we look forward to next year.”
