The pop up park supports and increases pedestrian safety, neighborhood identity, and beautification along the busy four-lane corridor of Covington Highway.

The ArtLot is a public space where locals and visitors alike enjoy a creative experience involving sculptures and visual art installations, seating areas for conversation and contemplation, green walls and a performance space.

The Arts Alliance completed the construction of The ArtLot in late 2016 and programmed the space until the end of 2017. The Arts Alliance and DDA ended their contract with the City and the property now exists as a public park maintained by the City of Avondale Estates. Programming and events are ongoing, and interested parties may contact City Hall for permission to use the space.

Help create something great in Avondale! The Avondale Arts Alliance needs volunteers to prepare the old Avondale Pizza Cafe lot for the new ArtLot. Sign up online to bring a tool or two and  help with the clean up. Each volunteer should provide your own work gloves.  The Avondale Arts Alliance will provide snacks, refreshing beverages and lots of excitement for our new creation for Avondale. We also promise an ArtLot t-shirt when they are printed and a VIP invitation to our launch party.

The ArtLot

The Avondale Arts Alliance in collaboration with the City of Avondale Estates, artists, local citizens and businesses, is planning to create a temporary city park in an underutilized space fronting N. Avondale near the Tudor Village.

The concept is taking currently unused—and ugly—land and turning it into a pop-up art park. The vision is to create a temporary public space where locals and visitors alike can explore a creative experience that would involve sculptures and visual art installations, green walls and a performance space. It could also be used for many other daily uses from families picnicking to office workers using it for a coffee break.

The project aims to support and increase pedestrian safety, neighborhood identity, and beautification along the busy 4-lane corridor. Activating this area of the downtown will help shape and define plans for a more permanent future development investment by the City. The project is intended to be a public experiment for the City, supported by City funding, to work with local communities and organizations to temporarily test new ideas in the public realm.

Goals

-Attract new visitors to the Central Business District to support businesses

-Develop and test arts-related programming on a consistent basis to build a catalog of successful events for the downtown area

-Reimagine the potential of downtown city streets and park spaces

-Highlight and grow the awareness of the unique artistic character of Avondale Estates

-Encourage non-motor transportation

-Enhance pedestrian safety & activities

-Engage neighbors, schools and community to contribute and participate

Materials and design installations are meant to be curated, attractive, temporary, easily moveable, be open to the need for design changes and offer a unique artist-driven design aesthetic. The Art Lot would remain in place on a trial basis as an “ongoing festival” where a variety of arts programming would occur on a weekly or monthly basis. Over time, the space could be reclaimed permanently as public open spaces or be developed into other projects.

The Avondale Arts Alliance invites you to our first ArtsMingle event on Wednesday, April 24th, 7 pm at Little Tree Art Studios. ArtsMingle was created to bring together those who support the arts, culture and culinary businesses and organizations in our community with the creatives behind it all.

Sounds amazing, right? Join us next Wednesday evening to meet the Avondale Arts Alliance Board and mingle with other creatives and arts advocates while enjoying a glass of wine, beer and tasty nibbles. Our plan is to host 3-4 of these events a year – we’d love to get your feedback and hear what you’d like to see at future events!

Kindergarten Project: Encaustic collage by Penny Treese

The Avondale Arts Alliance was thrilled to sponsor the Grand Art Projects for The Museum School of Avondale Estates’ auction, set for Saturday, November 3rd, 2012 at Little Tree Art Studios. Local artists worked with the 1st-5th grades over several weeks and had an amazing time working with students on various art projects ranging from upcycled fabric weaving and foil leaf reliefs to mixed media and collage. Student work was incoporated into original pieces of art that were featured in the live auction.

The R.A.D. (Rail Arts District) Studio Cruise, that took place on Saturday, March 2, featured local studios, galleries and businesses who opened their doors to the masses for a day of art hopping in the Rail Arts District in Avondale Estates. Little Tree Art Studios, Atlanta Hot Glass, Yay Studio and Mudfire Gallery were just a few of over 40 participants in the area. While it was one of the coldest days of the year so far, folks braved the snow flurries to visit some of our most creative folks in the area.

At our January board meeting, we invited Jeff Mather, environmental artist/site sculptor, to give a presentation on how we can sponsor a community art project in Avondale Estates. He showed us some amazing projects including a community-based sculpture for the Clarkston Community Center. Designed and fabricated in partnership with the diverse communities in Clarkston, including refugees from many countries (Clarkston is a relocation center) and high school art students from the Atlanta Area School for the Deaf. The project was centered around a huge buttercup oak with an emphasis on how this tree serves as a metaphor. A gathering place, a hub of community. Look what the community designed! Wouldn’t it be great for our community to participate in such a meaningful project that connects to our community?
